Part of what makes Sullivan such a unique place is our people, so we'd like to introduce you to some of them in a series of posts. We asked associates around the firm why they chose Sullivan and what their experiences have been like since joining us.

Elke Trilla is an Associate in the Corporate Department of Sullivan's Boston office.

Elke's practice focuses on corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, venture capital transactions, restructurings, recapitalizations and ongoing corporate governance matters. She advises both domestic and international clients, including public companies, private equity groups, investors, established and startup companies across a variety of industries and geographic footprints.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

I chose Sullivan because in addition to its reputation for sophisticated transactional work, I was struck by the collegial environment and the entrepreneurial opportunities for attorneys. Sullivan’s leadership is supportive of initiatives raised by attorneys of all levels whether it is related to new client opportunities, pro-bono matters, diversity and inclusion initiatives, or civic engagement.

She also represents public companies in securities law compliance, general disclosure and periodic reporting and governance matters. Prior to joining Sullivan, Emily worked as the Assistant Chief of Registration, Inspections, Compliance and Examinations at the Massachusetts Securities Division.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

I chose Sullivan because of the people. It was clear to me prior to joining Sullivan that the partners and associates work in a supportive, collaborative environment in which people value one another’s input. In addition, it was clear to me that if I joined Sullivan I would be working with extremely intelligent attorneys on complex matters. That combination was very attractive because it presents junior attorneys with exciting opportunities in an environment where asking questions and learning is supported.

Matt Bailey is a first-year associate in Sullivan’s Boston office, and joined the firm after working as a Summer Associate. He received his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 2020, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Uniform Commercial Code Reporter-Digest. Also while in law school he served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Robert B. Foster at the Massachusetts Land Court.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

Sullivan’s first-year rotation program drew me to the firm. Although I knew before starting law school that I wanted to work in a transactional area, I was uncertain which practice appealed to me. The rotation gives first-year associates the opportunity to make an informed decision.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

I choose Sullivan because it offered the challenging work and the resources of a bigger firm, but the closer-knit environment of a smaller firm. I wanted a firm where I could build my career and see myself working there long-term.

Nate is Co-Chair of Sullivan's Associates Committee.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

Having worked at a couple large shops as a paralegal before law school, I wanted to find a version of big law that was both intellectually fulfilling and personally sustainable for the long haul. Sullivan offers big firm resources, sophisticated client work, work-life balance and opportunity for early associate development. That’s the sort of balance I was looking for. Also, the people I met in the hiring process were wonderful and a big part of my decision.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

I wanted a medium-sized Boston based firm where I could settle in and build my practice from the ground up. I met such wonderful people during the hiring process that I knew this would be a place I could feel very comfortable with my colleagues and still work on top-notch matters. Between the size, location, people, caliber of work, commitment to pro bono, and the first year rotation, it was a no-brainer!

Rachel Gants worked as a Summer Associate in 2019 prior to receiving her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2020. While in law school, she was a member of HLS's Tenant Advocacy Project, and also interned for Justice Richard Stearns at the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Proficient in Spanish, Rachel was a Yale University Fox Fellow from 2012 to 2014 at the El Colégio de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

I chose Sullivan for the opportunity to join a high-level practice, with respected attorneys domestically and internationally. But more importantly, I joined Sullivan because of the firm’s culture and the priority it places on building community and mentoring attorneys early in their careers. Even beyond the summer associate program and early in the first year, I’ve been consistently impressed by the time Sullivan attorneys take to attend social, pro bono, and mentoring events. It’s an incredible community to join early in your career, and I’m looking forward to continuing to learn more from colleagues and to find more ways to support pro bono work and new attorneys as I continue with my time at Sullivan.

Breckenridge

Luke Breckenridge is a litigation associate in Sullivan's Boston office. While at Boston College Law School, he was a staff writer and staff editor for the Uniform Commercial Code Reporter-Digest and an active member of the Latin American Law Students Association. Luke also interned at the United States Attorney’s Office in Boston where he assisted the Affirmative Civil Enforcement unit.

Why did you choose Sullivan?

When I was evaluating firms during the OCI process, two things stood out to me about Sullivan. First, the encounters I had at the firm were almost uniformly positive. Attorneys and support staff spoke highly of the firm and excitedly about their work. It was clear that people held one another in high regard there. Secondly, I heard there was a lot of interdisciplinary collaboration between lawyers in different practice areas. I went to a liberal arts school for undergrad and this approach appealed to me. To hear about the first-year rotation program only made me feel more strongly like this might be a good fit.
