Student Loan Debt and 401(k) Plans

Many (if not most) graduating law students will have over $100,000 in law school debt (in addition to any undergrad loans), so the issue of how to pay both student loans and contribute towards one's retirement is a highly relevant one.

Last Friday, the IRS issued a ruling allowing employers to "match" student loan repayments of employees even if the employees are not making 401(k) contributions.

That ruling was the subject of a recent blog post by David Guadagnolitax partner and head of Sullivan's Employment & Benefits group, and Amy Sheridan, tax partner and head of Sullivan's Hiring Committee.

Corporate Associate Publishes Client Advisory

In response to one of the 2017 tax reform's most far-reaching programs, Sullivan launched the Opportunity Zones Practice Group, a multi-disciplinary team comprised of attorneys from the firm's Affordable Housing, Real Estate, Tax and Corporate departments.

The Opportunity Zones program is an economic tool designed to utilize tax incentives to drive long-term growth in low-income urban and rural communities. These Zones have been designated in all 50 states and represent a significant growth opportunity for the firm.
