Looking forward to two great art and law events this week at the New York City Bar, both at 42 West 44th Street. Hope to see many of you there!
On Tuesday March 11, 2014 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Judith Prowda, faculty at Sotheby’s Institute and author of Visual Arts and the Law will mediate a panel entitled “Copyright Fair Use: The Importance of Being Transformative - Has Transformative Use Gone Too Far?” Panelists will be Judge Denny Chin; Dale Cendali, Kirkland & Ellis LLP; Richard Dannay, Cowan Liebowitz & Latman, P.C.; Pamela Samuelson, Professor of Law, Berkeley Law School, Co-Director, Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.
With last month’s Garcia v. Google decision, Judge Chin’s Google Books opinion, and the ongoing Cariou v. Prince case, this could scarcely be more timely. Judith’s book launch in October was occasion for one of the most stimulating fair use discussions I have ever attended, so I can hardly wait. The event is free.
On Wednesday March 12, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., the City Bar will host an approved CLE program entitled “Hot Topics in Art Law 2014.” These presentation titles and panelists speak for themselves, and are can’t-miss opportunities to learn. The schedule is as follows:
Introduction
Dean R. Nicyper
Authenticity Issues and Recent Developments
Judith A. Bresler
The Law Applicable to Art Consignments
Stacy Lefkowitz
Art Repatriation and Restitution
Howard N. Spiegler
